My Garmin Nuvi 855

The Garmin Nuvi 855 price dropped in May 2010, and I named it the best GPS forGarmin Nuvi 855 the money on June 1, 2010.

Linda and I had been discussing replacing our old Garmin Street Pilot 330 and the value for the price of the 855 motivated us to go ahead and purchase one.  We could not be more pleased with our decision.

Two days after it arrived from Amazon, I took it with me  on a business trip to California.  I landed at the Oakland airport, picked up my car, entered the address of my destination, and off I went.  The navigation was perfect and I had no problems finding my destination.

The Garmin Nuvi 855 gives you many benefits, but to me the most impressive is the ability for it to understand your verbal commands without having to train it to your voice.  Linda or I can give it commands and it will recognize either of our voices.

I like the speed limit indicator on the Garmin Nuvi 855.  In the lower left corner of the display, it shows  the speed limit for all major roads.  I watch it as I pass a speed limit sign where the speed limit increases or decreases and within feet of passing the sign, the 855 will show the new speed limit.

The speedometer on Linda's Subaru is about four miles slow.  I give the command "Trip Computer" to the Nuvi 855 to display the trip computer screen.  This gives me our speed, and I set the cruise control based on it.  When I have finished with the trip computer, I give the 855 the command "View Map" and it switches back to the route map.

I also discovered that the Garmin Nuvi 855 recognizes some words that are not in the instructions.  If I say "Speed" or "Time", it will display the trip computer screen.

I can adjust the volume with the "Volume Up" or "Volume Down" commands.  Each time I give a volume command, the Nuvi 855 will change the volume by ten percent.

Sometimes I take a shortcut that is not the route the GPS has charted.  When I do this, the Nuvi 855 will say "Recalculating" and start trying to guide me back to the original route.  When this becomes annoying, I say "Cancel Route" and it stops all navigation.  When I am back to the planned route or I am far enough along on my short cut that the 855 will recalculate a new route from my current location, I say "Find Recently Found".  My destination will be available on the list of locations on the display.  I tell the 855 the line number of the destinations on the list and it will recalculate the route to my destination.  I do have to look at the list on the display so this does require taking my eyes off the road.

The day I received it, I tried the feature to find restaurants and it worked quite well.  When you tell it to find a restaurant, it will ask you what type of food.  I told it Italian.  We do not have any Italian restaurants in our home town so I wanted to see what it would find.  It found Linda's and my favorite Italian restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas which is about a 40 mile drive for us.

I agree with the old saying "There is no place like home".  When I am ready to go home all I do is tell the 855 "Go Home" and it guides me home.

The Nuvi 855 has many other features and benefits:

  • Wide screen display (4.3 diagonal inches) so you can read the display easily.
  • Lane Assist with junction view so you know in advance the correct lane for the approaching turn.
  • FM transmitter to hear voice prompts, MP3 player, and audio book player through your car stereo
  • MSN Direct compatible
  • FM traffic compatible
  • USB for easy download
  • Speed limit indicator (Author's note:  This is cool)
  • Garmin Garage
  • Where Am I? emergency locator
  • MP3 player, JPEG picture viewer, travel alarm, and currency converters
  • Maps for United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada
  • Standard headphone and microphone jacks
  • Free Shipping from Amazon

I think I purchased the best GPS for the money.  I recommend that you take a hard look at the Garmin Nuvi 855.  I do not think you will be disappointed when you buy it.
